ABRAMTSEVO - LA TERRA DEI TALENTI

Opere di Michail Vrubel
Museo Civico Villa dei Cedri
17 aprile — 29 giugno 2014

In the context of the jubilee cultural and artistic festivities celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Russia, the Museo Civico Villa dei Cedri presents works by major Russian artist of the Symbolist and Jugendstil period Michail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856?1910).
Michail Vrubel was a visionary and versatile artist with a great decorative sensitivity who excelled in painting and drawing as well as in monumental and applied arts, such as ceramics, majolics and stained glass. He also produced stage sets and costumes.

Mikhail Vrubel was born in Omsk in 1856 and graduated in law before entering the St Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1880 to study philosophy and begin a course in drawing oriented towards the Italian Renaissance. From 1884 until 1889 he lived in Kiev, where he studied icon painting intensively and produced several sketches for the frescoes in Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral.  In 1890 Michail Vrubel became a member of the Abramtsevo artistic circle, created by arts patron and industrialist Savva Mamontov, which included most of the best-known Russian artists at the turn of the 20th century. The large-format oil paintings, frescoes and ceramics  for Mamontov's homes, together with the stage sets he created for his private opera, finally made Vrubel famous. A gravely sick man towards the end of his life, Mikhail Vrubel was confined to a clinic from 1905 and blind from 1906. He finally died in 1910.

The works by Michail Vrubel in the collection of the Museum Reserve Abramtsevo, which constitute the core of the present exhibition, reveal the essential component of the artist’s work: his cultural universalism.
